The title of this chapter could cause some concern or confusion: “Do you mean to tell me that the numbers we’ve been using all this time haven’t even been * real* yet?!?”

Not at all! But in this chapter, for the first time, you will be dealing with ALL of the different sub-families of Real Numbers. Not just Counting Numbers, Integers, and Rational Numbers…but also (for the first time, in many cases) Irrational Numbers.

You’re familiar with some Irrational Numbers (like Pi, for example) but the main ones we will focus on are ones that are found when taking the square roots of non-square numbers. And, for the first time, we will leave these Irrational Numbers in their Irrational form rather than estimating them as decimals and continuing from there.
