The History of Math & Art

“Knot” by Robert Bosch (2006)

Art historian Lyn Gamwell has just published a book about the history of Art and Mathematics and their influences on each other.

In her article for The Guardian (UK), she picks out a certain number of artistic pieces and describes the mathematics used to create those pieces.

Check out the article here:  http://www.theguardian.com/science/alexs-adventures-in-numberland/2015/dec/02/why-the-history-of-maths-is-also-the-history-of-art

BADGING:

Read the article above.  Pick out a piece of art from the article and write a paragraph describing the work the artist does (for instance, are they described a mathematician or an artist?) and how mathematics is demonstrated in the particular piece of art.  Print out a picture of the art and include it with your badge.  Write a second paragraph explaining what you think Dr. Gamwell meant by her phrase “I hope they will read this book and discover that history is a storybook and that math is about captivating ideas.”
