Stephen Colbert Cooks Up Some Mathematics

Dr. Eugenia Cheng (University of Sheffield) appeared on The Late Show to talk about her new book.  Colbert had some fun with baking and math and stuff.  Check it out in the video above.

BADGING:  Watch the video.

Write a paragraph explaining what you think she meant by “It’s important in math for everything to have the right consistency” while she was bashing her 1/2 pound of butter.  What have we learned in Pre-Algebra this year that reflects her statement?

Write a second paragraph explaining what you think she meant by “Math is about making your own rules up.”  Do you agree with her?  Is there anything we’ve done this year in Pre-Algebra that could be considered “making your own rules up”?

Write a third paragraph explaining what you think she meant by “You see, I can’t do this because I’m a mathematician, not a calculator.”  Shouldn’t mathematicians be able to do arithmetic quickly?  What do you think she was trying to say?
