From Allies to Zebras

iebxyn4gzm4wxfiq2l0uA favorite mathematician around this site is Alan Turing.  He’s best known for breaking the German Enigma code in WW2, and for his work in Artificial Intelligence.  Did you know he also tried to mathematically explain a zebra’s stripes (or a leopard’s spots, etc.)?

Check out this long read detailing how.  The math is pretty complicated, but this article does a nice job distilling it down to it’s essence.

How the Zebra got it’s stripes with Alan Turing (io9)

BADGING:  Read the (long) article and write a single paragraph summarizing Turing’s work in this area.
